Bronx High School of Science Parents' Assocation

Parent Spotlight: Mag Sim

Speaking of volunteers, many BxSci parents give of their time and talent to help our school each year. We’ve featured some of these awesome parent volunteers in past editions of this newsletter (click here to see all of this year’s Parent Spotlights). Today we’d like you to learn more about another parent who has taken on an important responsibility for the PA.

Magdalene Sim (Mag for short) is the parent of a BxSci junior. She volunteered to help secure guest speakers for some of our PA meetings, and has done a terrific job of doing that this year. She helps identify potential speakers, invites them to come speak to BxSci parents, collects their bios and/or composes brief question-and-answer profiles, and serves as the main point of contact for guest speakers. For last week’s PA meeting, she reached out to all the panelists and worked with BxSci’s Mr. Nasser to plan the session.

Mag works as a communications consultant specializing in nonprofits, sustainability, and the arts. She and her family live in Harlem. Here’s what she says about volunteering at Bronx Science:

“The Bronx Science community is such a vibrant one not only because of our children but also because of all the parent volunteers (and staff, of course). Helping out allows me to get to know at least some of the terrific people here. It is a testament to everyone involved with the school, past and present, that Bronx Science has maintained such a reputation for excellence. Whenever I reach out to expert speakers, they are usually eager to share their knowledge with us because they know what a terrific audience we have.”

Our thanks to Mag for helping to make our PA meetings so useful, informative, and engaging!

If you, too, would like to volunteer in some capacity, please fill out this online form. Volunteer opportunities abound throughout the year, and not all of them require you to travel to the Bronx. By volunteering, you’ll meet new people, have some fun, and develop an even greater appreciation for how wonderful our school is.
