Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents and Guardians,
It was gratifying to see those of you who joined us for Thursday night’s special presentation on Teens and Substance Abuse, featuring Dr. Linda Richter from the Partnership to End Addiction. Thank you to AP Andrew Nasser for moderating this virtual presentation on how to protect teens from substance use. We know this is a topic that has been on many of your minds, and it was our pleasure to be able to bring you this insightful program. Dr. Richter brought a wonderful combination of facts and empathy to help us better understand both risk factors for and prevention of substance abuse. It was a very informative evening, and we were grateful that so many of you were able to join us, and for your thoughtful questions. Please find a copy of the presentation slides here.
Last week also saw the annual internal financial audit, conducted by Audit Committee Chair, Paul Goldfarb, and Audit Committee members Jamileh-Sofia diGuida, Kristen Lasky, Hania McCarthy, and Kathy Sheehan. We are grateful for your thoroughness and careful attention to detail. Findings will be shared at our next PA meeting, on June 12, 2024, at 7 PM at the school.
This is a tremendously busy time of year, and we still have several events coming up.
First, we have a CRITICAL NEED for more volunteers for Bronx Science Alumni Day on June 2. Our alumni are home to visit their alma mater, and our alumni love merch! We have made a commitment to the school and to the Bronx Science Foundation to be present and sell merchandise, and we have several shifts from 9-3 that are critically short-staffed. If you have any time at all that day, please join a shift at the link here and help our alumni strut their Bronx Sci stuff!
We also urgently need volunteers for the following events:
June 5, Prospective Student Open House, 4-7 PM, greeters
June 6, Incoming Parent Breakfast, shifts from 8-12:30, merch and hospitality
June 10, Senior Awards Ceremony, hospitality shifts from 4-9. 9th-11th grade parents, please help our senior families celebrate!
We know the school year feels very long by late May, but your help is essential to get us to the finish line this year! We are grateful to all our volunteers who have helped us put on so many successful events this year, and who have worked so tirelessly behind the scenes. This week we are featuring our Chinese Translation Team. This group not only translates our weekly newsletter, but they also translate meeting and presentation reminders, other PA communications, and they occasionally assist the school with translation as well. This home-grown team is fairly unique in NYC Public Schools, and they are critical to our ability to connect with all of you. Please see In the Spotlight below for their names. We are grateful for your service!
We hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend, and that you have a meaningful Memorial Day tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Allen-Cheng, Christine Kattan, and Elizabeth Polkovitz
