Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents and Guardians,

We hope your students were able to enjoy the long weekend after midterms. Despite the shortened week, we still have lots of news and important upcoming dates to share with you.

The PA kicked off last week with a teacher, administration, and staff appreciation lunch during Professional Development Day. Attendees were grateful for the PA’s support! Thanks to our Hospitality Co-Chairs, Lilach Bar and Kosaku Shinoda and to the volunteers who assisted the day of the event (see In the Spotlight post below). We also thank all our Bronx Science families for making events like this possible. These gestures are appreciated by those who keep our Bronx Science community thriving! See below for pictures from this event.

If you have not already done so, please mark your calendars for our next in-person PA Meeting this Wednesday, February 8th at 7:00pm, which will include a course selection presentation for parents of 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. Assistant Principals Dr. Allison Davis and Andrew Nasser will break down the course selection process, including timeline and other important considerations. Dr. Davis will also provide an overview of Bronx Science’s reputable research program! This meeting will be hybrid, but 9th – 11th grade parents are encouraged to attend in person to foster better dialogue around the course selection process. Please note, per Department of Education mandate, school visitors need to present photo identification and proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

During this meeting, we will also introduce and elect the Nominating Committee for our May PA Executive Board (EB) and School Leadership Team (SLT) elections. More details to follow on how BxSci parents and guardians may run for positions on the EB and SLT this spring. We are excited to see the diverse talents and skills our community has to offer being represented!

If you’re unable to join our February meeting in person, please find the Zoom link here. Minutes from our January meeting will be voted on during this meeting and can be found here.

While we’re on the topic, Education Council elections are just around the corner. Education Councils advocate for schools in their district or group and make important decisions which influence education in their communities. These councils can have a real impact on issues such as budget and school utilization. Please see the Education Council Elections post below for more details, or reach out to us. Applications are open through Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, for elections this spring.

It is our mission to update our community on how to stay informed on education issues that impact us. As such, the Citywide Council on High Schools (CCHS) is inviting parents and guardians to a Town Hall Event with Chancellor David Banks this Tuesday, February 7th from 6:30-7:30 PM. We applaud Chancellor Banks and Mayor Adams for their recent announcement to support our city’s students with the highest needs, while continuing to meet the needs of all NYC students, including those at high-performing schools like Bronx Science. This Town Hall is an excellent opportunity to engage with Chancellor Banks and demonstrate the depth of our community’s engagement and involvement. We will be there in person, and strongly encourage you to join us! Please see CCHS Town Hall post below for more information, including remote details for those who cannot join in person.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our next PA meeting on February 8th.

Sincerely,

Christine Kattan, Jayesh Patel and Elizabeth Polkovitz

Black History Month provides a rich opportunity to consider the impact made by and credit due to Black Americans; we encourage you to take advantage of that chance this February.
