Bronx High School of Science Parents' Assocation

Message from our Co-Presidents: October 7, 2018

Dear Bronx Science Families,

On Tuesday, Dr. Donahue informed the Bronx Science community about the death of one of our students. We wanted all parents to be clear on how our children were notified, and what support the school is offering to our community.

Dr. Donahue’s letter, which went out around mid-day via email on Tuesday, informed parents, and outlined the support the school is providing to students via the Crisis Response Team. Around the same time on Tuesday, students received a letter via email from Dr. Donahue. The text was slightly different than the parent letter, encouraging students to reach out to their guidance counselor. If you or your child did not receive these emails from the school, please contact Cindy Golan here to be updated.

On Wednesday morning, a school wide announcement was made reiterating the support the school is offering, and a minute of silence was observed.

Student leaders from the Student Organization Leadership Cabinet met with administration leaders on Wednesday to discuss how to best help and support our children. If your child would like to be involved, or would like to learn more, please encourage them to email the S.O. Leadership Cabinet here.

We encourage you to talk to your child about this death and provide support and understanding during this difficult time. Dealing with loss is different for everyone.

Please let your child know that they can see a school counselor any time, and will be given a pass for missed classes after their meeting. They will not be penalized for going to the Guidance Suite. If you are concerned about your child or observe any changes in their behavior, please reach out to your child’s guidance counselor. Your child may become irritated if you ask them how they are coping, but ask anyway. You can find your child’s guidance counselor here. The Guidance Suite is open daily from 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.

Losing someone so young, and so suddenly, comes with great speculation, while it is natural to want more details, the school must respect the family’s request for privacy.
