Bronx High School of Science Parents' Assocation

Parent Spotlight: Liz Gorai

Many BxSci parents give of their time and talent to help our school each year. We’ve featured some of these awesome parent volunteers in past editions of this newsletter (click here to see all of this year’s Parent Spotlights). Today we’d like you to learn more about another parent who has taken on an important responsibility for the PA.

For the past two-and-a-half years, Liz Gorai, mom of a BxSci junior, has been in charge of planning and overseeing the 7 or 8 dinners that the PA hosts at the school each year. These big events include the Staff Appreciation Dinners in the fall and spring, the Senior Research Poster event, the NHS dinner for about 400 senior students and their families, and the College Fair dinner for more than 200 college admissions reps.

Liz and her family live in Harlem. She and her husband own and operate Kyokushin Karate, a dojo in midtown Manhattan, and she herself holds a 5th degree black belt! (Fun fact: Liz is also a former women’s world champion in freestyle frisbee.) In the summer, she runs her family’s pan-Asian restaurant in Wolfeboro, NH. Here’s what she says about volunteering at Bronx Science:

“Organizing the dinner events at Bronx Science is a great way to meet and work alongside fellow parents at a festive occasion, at which we can give a little bit back to the school that gives our families so much. To host and present a beautiful spread of food to our teachers, staff, students, and parents is a fabulous experience. I’m actively looking to put together a team of parents to co-chair these big events next year, so please email me (kkny.sensei@gmail.com) if you’re interested!”

Our thanks to Liz for being so organized and detail-oriented, for staying calm under pressure, for being a fantastic team player, and for always ordering excellent food!
