Every year, many BxSci parents volunteer their time and talent to help our school. In recent issues of this newsletter, we’ve featured Lise Aug, Lidija Markes, and Jing Gao. Today we’d like you to learn more about another parent who helps the PA with several important initiatives.
If you purchased any BxSci merchandise at school last fall, you may have already met Christopher Harwood. Chris volunteered to take charge of PA merchandise sales this school year. He is responsible for those great-looking tees, sweatshirts, baseball caps, and other swag that are sold in the school lobby during parent-teacher conferences and other school events. Chris has done a marvelous job of keeping track of inventory, designing and ordering new items, setting prices, and overseeing the actual sales events including setup and cleanup. (The other fantastic volunteers on the merchandise sales team are Mary Boland-Look, Michael Look, and Weier Lu.)
In addition, Chris has volunteered at past PA events. You may have seen him tending bar at last year’s Spring Auction.
Chris and his wife have two sons; one is a BxSci sophomore and the other is a seventh grader at The Center School. He and his family live in Harlem. When he’s not dreaming up new ideas for BxSci merchandise, he can be found teaching at Columbia University, where he is a lecturer in Czech in the university’s Department of Slavic Languages.
Here’s what Chris says about volunteering at Bronx Science: “I’m so glad that I found this niche organizing merchandise for the PA. It’s been a great opportunity to give back to the school, to get to know other parent volunteers, and also to make sure my son and I (and my parents!) can get some really cool-looking Bronx Science hats, t-shirts, hoodies, umbrellas, mugs, etc.”
Our thanks to Chris for everything he does for our school!
If you, too, would like to volunteer in some capacity, please fill out this online form. Volunteer opportunities abound throughout the year, and not all of them require you to travel to the Bronx. By volunteering, you’ll meet new people, have some fun, and develop an even greater appreciation for how wonderful our school is.
