Candidates for PA Executive Board

Mary Ann Carlese, Co-President

I am the parent of a current 10th-grader and running for co-president. I have served on the Bronx Science Parents Association for two years, first as member at large and this year as assistant treasurer. My child Leo graduated from Lab Middle School, where I served on their Parents’ Association for two years, including as co-assistant treasurer and co-president. While there, I organized a Lunar New Year celebration and several fundraising events, as well as student events and family workshops. I have been involved at many events here at Bronx Science, particularly those geared at supporting parent involvement. At Columbia University, where I work, I am one of the leaders for our LGBTQ employee resource group, which raises awareness about LGBTQ inclusion. I would like to serve on the Bronx Science PA as co-president to help the school continue its long tradition of successful events and give support for the teachers, staff, students and families. I find joy in building community, valuing differences and making all people feel welcome. One of my goals would be to find additional and varied ways for people to be involved, so more families participate and feel connected to our community at multiple levels.

Sovannary Tan, Co-President

I am honored to run for co-president alongside Arthur Wong and Mary Ann Carlese. Currently, I serve as an Executive Board member at large. As a parent of a freshman, I have been deeply impressed by the dedication of our parent volunteers and the strong, supportive community that our principal and staff have fostered for our students.

I hold master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer science from the University of Waterloo in Canada, as well as a TESOL graduate certificate from NYU. I am an executive director at a financial institution, specializing in software engineering.

In terms of volunteering, I co-chaired the Taste of Tribeca in 2022, a fundraiser for PS 150 and PS 234 that raised a net $160,000. In 2023, I founded the Math Club at PS 150, achieving a 70% student enrollment. I am proud to share that PS 150 was recently awarded the 2024 National Blue Ribbon School Award. Additionally, I serve on Trinity Church’s Congregation, where I focus on supporting downtown neighborhoods and communities.

I am proud and excited for the opportunity to contribute to this very special, nationally recognized school, supporting our principal, teachers, staff, and families in every way I can.

Arthur Wong,  Co-President

A dedicated community leader, Arthur Wong brings a proven track record of impactful engagement. As the former vice president of the Parent Association at Hudsonway Immersion School for eight years, he was instrumental in establishing foundational processes like the class parent system, fostering consistent classroom experiences across diverse language programs and age groups. Currently an associate director in Verizon’s Project Management Office, Arthur resides on the Upper West Side and is eager to continue his service as president of the PA for the upcoming academic year, building on his commitment to student success. He is the proud father of Suri Wong, a sophomore at Bronx Science.

Helen Goldman, Co-Vice President

I’m excited to run for a second term as co-vice president on the Parents Association Executive Board! This past year, I’ve loved the opportunity to serve, connect with community leaders, and support our Bronx Science families.

As co-vice president for Community Relations, my focus has been building strong partnerships between Bronx Science and the wider community — something I’m passionate about as a longtime Bronx resident. I’m excited to continue working alongside parents, staff, and community leaders to create opportunities that help our students thrive.

With a background in human resources, I’m experienced in collaborating with diverse groups and navigating complex challenges. I believe in open communication, teamwork, and decision-making that brings everyone’s voice to the table.

I’m proud to support the PA’s mission of promoting education, well-being, and strong family-school partnerships. I would be honored to continue working together to enrich our students’ experience and set them up for success!

Xia Li, Co-Vice President

My name is Xia Li, and my daughter Maggie is a rising senior at Bronx Science.

I am honored and humbled to apply for co-vice president of the Parent Association. My motivation comes from a deep desire to share this high school journey with my daughter and to demonstrate how much I value her school. I also want to show her how meaningful — and even fun — it is to volunteer and contribute to a strong school community.

This year, I have had the privilege of serving as co-president of the Parent Association. In this role, I helped build the Hospitality Team and took the lead in coordinating and supervising various PA events

Due to increased professional responsibilities, the vice president role would be a better fit for my schedule next year. I remain passionate about supporting the school and am particularly interested in fundraising. I would be excited to collaborate with the other two vice presidents in supporting the PA co-presidents.

I bring to this role a strong sense of responsibility and dedication. In addition to being a proud parent, I am an associate professor at a CUNY college, where I’ve been deputy chair of my department for many years.

Fotini (Fo) Marcopulos, Co-Vice President

Mark Yim, Co-Recording Secretary

This will be my second year serving as co-recording secretary. I like being in the loop on developments at Bronx Science, including meeting other parents; more generally, I want to help enhance the school experience for all students by supporting their needs wherever the Parents Association can and should. I have served on my residential co-op board for many years, including as president and as secretary. Our daughter attended a small private middle and elementary school before Bronx Science, and I believe I can effectively advocate for the unique needs of that cohort. Professionally, I am a portfolio manager in international equities. I live in upper Manhattan with my spouse Peter, our daughter, and our two cats.

Virginia Louie, Co-Recording Secretary

It is an honor to be running for co-recording secretary as part of a slate with Mark Yim and Sneha Kelkar. By way of introduction, I am a busy mom to Andrew, a current sophomore at Bronx Science (as well as a senior and a fifth-grader at other schools). We live on the Upper West Side. When I’m not on mom duty, I work as in-house counsel at a management consulting company.

Over the past year, I have enjoyed getting to know many of the parents at Bronx Science, especially at PA meetings and also by helping out at other events such as the open houses for prospective and admitted students. I want to continue to be actively involved in my children’s education, and one of the ways to do that is to volunteer my time and effort as part of the PA Executive Board. Along with all of the other dedicated parents at the school, I hope our collective contributions will help make our children’s experience at Bronx Science truly the best it can be.

Sneha Kelkar, Co-Recording Secretary

Hello! My name is Sneha Kelkar. I am a freshman mom, and currently a member-at-large on the PA Executive Board. I graduated from Columbia University and I am working in public health as a director in a healthcare consulting firm. Dealing with project proposals, budgets and cross collaboration with a multifaceted team comes naturally to me. I have been president of a social awareness club in India and led efforts on cleanliness, education, and orphan and elderly welfare on a small scale.

Our first year at Bronx Science has been truly a rewarding experience. I have witnessed my daughter being able to select from so many wonderful opportunities guided by a strong team of teachers and counselors. Being a member-at-large, I understand the large part that PA plays in getting the best for our kids. I have been volunteering at various Bronx Science events over the last year. I would be honored to continue serving on the board as a recording secretary. My attention to details and work experience will help me for this role while offering support in other areas as well. Thank you for considering my nomination.

Julie Chin-Tom, Co-Treasurer

Professionally, I am an accountant and I have also been an auditor in the past. I am detail and process oriented. My goal is to utilize my skills and background to contribute to our wonderful school community. I am running for a second term and hope to build upon the success of this current school year.

Ashok Eastman, Co-Treasurer

I am excited to run for co-treasurer of the Executive Board of the Bronx Science Parents Association. Over the past year, I have served as an active member of the executive board, organizing a sold-out parent’s comedy night and a successful Yankees outing for Bronx Science families. Additionally, I have held a leadership role on the Gala Committee for the past two years, coordinating over 100 volunteers. As the father of a Bronx Science sophomore and a 12-year-old middle school student, I have actively supported their schools through leadership roles in parent associations and advocacy councils. In this capacity, I have organized initiatives, educating prospective students and their families about the schools and helped administrators better understand parent needs. Having worked with the Bronx Science parent community, I appreciate the energy and commitment I’ve seen and believe I can continue to be impactful as co-treasurer.

I grew up in Burlington, Vermont, attended college in Boston, and currently work as an investment manager at UBS, frequently analyzing financial statements for corporations and non-profits. My experience in financial services and the Parents Association, along with my team-based approach to communication and tackling challenges makes me well suited for the responsibilities of co-treasurer.

Nicole Allen, Corresponding Secretary

Nicole Allen has been a parent at Bronx Science now for six years and is seeking reelection for the role of corresponding secretary.

Nicole started volunteering for the Bronx Science Parents Association as a member-at-large coordinating school fundraisers like Comedy Night and has been active in helping co-chair the annual Open House events as well as volunteering for the school as a speech and debate judge.

Outside of school, Nicole is an active volunteer in her local community and sits on the board of the alumni association of the United World Colleges New York chapter. She volunteers as a French interpreter for Catholic Charities refugee resettlement program and plays the oboe in the ACMA orchestra and various chamber music groups.

Professionally, Nicole is a product director at the London Stock Exchange Group working in applied artificial intelligence, having worked in fintech for two decades. Nicole attended McGill University for undergrad and the Australian National University for her master’s degree on a Rotary scholarship studying economics, development studies and Chinese language.

Tiffany Boydell, Member-at-Large

My name is Tiffany Boydell, and I’m the parent of a ninth-grade student. I’m interested in becoming a member-at-large on the Parents Association Board because I want to be more involved in our school community, get to know other families, and help create an environment where all families feel connected and supported.

Throughout my children’s school years, I’ve held various leadership roles because I enjoy being involved and helpful. For instance, I served as community service chair at my children’s middle school, where I led a team of parent volunteers in organizing community service events, including Thanksgiving food drives, holiday gift drives for homeless children, winter coat drives, and park cleanup days. At my children’s lower school at the UN International School, I served as class parent representative for multiple years. These roles allowed me to develop strong organizational, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills, which I believe will help me contribute positively to the PA Board.

What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to foster collaboration among parents, teachers, and staff to strengthen the school community and help ensure every family feels heard, valued, and supported.

Ernie Sander, Member-at-Large

I am Ernie Sander, and I am running as a member-at-large on the Parents’ Association board. My daughter, Lindsay, is a junior.

For the past couple of years, I’ve been a vice president on the PA and have led the merchandise committee. We’ve streamlined how we stock and order items, made it easier for shoppers to navigate our in-person sales, and added some new styles to our product list, including a few T-shirts and hoodies designed by students in the school’s Fashion Club.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve volunteered for a range of other activities at school, from debate judging to hospitality for accepted students to helping with the tech during the monthly PA meetings.

It’s a wonderful community of teachers, staff, parents and students — and I’m excited to stay involved and help out everywhere that I can.

My professional background is in media, as an editor at bigger publications as well as startups, managing teams of writers/editors/producers, launching new products, and overseeing content strategy. Currently, I’m a strategist at a communications agency, where I help executives and other leaders build their content footprint through thought leadership articles, speaking, podcasts and books.

Candidates for PA Rep on the SLT

David Alan Basche, SLT

I’m the proud father of a sophomore at Bronx Science. I’ve been attending almost every monthly Coffee With The Principal meeting at Bronx Science for about two years now, and I’m inspired to be of service to the school via the SLT. I’m also running for a seat on the Citywide Council on High Schools. I’m a certified New York State firefighter and president and CEO of the Saltaire Volunteer Fire Company; an emergency foster parent with the NY Foundling; a hands-on board member of the immigrant assistance group Sanctuary Neighborhoods NYC; and the product of – and strong advocate for – public high school education. As an actor, my career spans almost 30 years in stage, film and television, and I’ve worked with Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Paul Greengrass, Shawn Levy, Robert Zemeckis, James Mangold, and Michael Patrick King, among others. Over the years I’ve had starring roles on shows like “The Exes,” “Oh Grow Up,” “Three Sisters,” “Lipstick Jungle,” and “The Starter Wife.” My acting career has been amazingly fun, but I’m now focused on the importance of education and the joy of being of service. I think I’d be a good addition to the SLT!

MJ Islas, SLT

My name is MJ Islas. My husband, Angel, and I have three children, two of which attend The Bronx High School of Science. I am a teacher by profession, certified in visual arts and computer science. My 16 years of experience as an educator give me unique insight into the systems and practices that affect our children as students each day. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you in continuing the exceptional progress of Bronx Science.

Rachel Shuldiner, SLT

Hello, my name is Rachel Schuldiner and my son is currently in the 9th grade. I’ve lived in the Bronx for about a decade and am hoping to become more involved in the Bronx Science community. I’m a corporate lawyer with an interest in special education law. I work with a number of organizations which advocate on behalf of children with special needs and work to ensure that they receive all educational and therapeutic entitlements under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and state law. My goal on the School Leadership Team will be to work with other parents, students, teachers, and community members to develop and implement school policies, programs, and initiatives that align with the needs and goals of the school community and to ensure that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and considered.  I hope to be a conduit representing parent voices and ensuring that family perspectives are included in school decisions and will ensure that the parent body stays informed about the team’s activities and decisions.

Mary Ann Carlese,

Sovannary Tan,

Arthur Wong,

Helen Goldman,

Xia Li,

Fotini (Fo) Marcopulos,

Mark Yim,

Virginia Louie,

Sneha Kelkar,

Julie Chin-Tom,

Ashok Eastman,

Nicole Allen,

Nicole Allen

Tiffany Boydell,

Ernie Sander,
