Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents and Guardians,
The tragic events in the Middle East brought a new urgency to the Coffee with the Principal and Safety Town Hall held on Wednesday, October 11. We thank Principal Hoyle for her opening remarks on the recent terror attacks, her time, and her candor. We are grateful to our community for your thoughtful questions, and to Director of Safety and Security Vana Loukissas, the School Safety Committee, the NYPD and the FDNY for their time and their answers to your concerns. We hope the event was informative, and that many of you were able to stay for the very timely tour of our school’s Holocaust Museum, led by two of our student ambassadors from the Holocaust Museum class. Thank you to Rebecca Barreras for working with AP David Colchamiro to make that tour possible. Thank you also to Lilach Bar for the coffee and refreshments at the event.
We are gearing up for our fall elections, to be held remotely at 7 PM this Wednesday, October 18, via Zoom. We will be electing three (3) Members at Large and one representative for the School Leadership Team (SLT). Since we will be voting, registration is required to attend. It is important that you register using the email you use to communicate with the school. We ask that you register by noon on Monday, October 16, at this link, so that our school team has the opportunity to verify voter eligibility. Due to NYC Public Schools regulations, only verified parents will be allowed into the business and election portion of the meeting. Candidate bios can be found here, and the meeting agenda can be found here. Please note that the Member at Large nominations process has closed. Nominations will be taken from the floor for SLT only.
After the election, we are delighted to welcome faculty member Jep Jonson for a special presentation about supporting your child with organizational and time management skills. It can be challenging to find the right balance between supporting our teens with organization and letting them find their own way, and we hope this program will assist you and your child with navigating these hurdles. The PA meeting will not be recorded, except for the election portion of the meeting.
Get excited for the Fall Open House, to be held on October 24, from 5-7 PM. For those who have never been able to attend a Bronx Science Open House, this is a high energy event which requires a lot of parent involvement. Our role is to answer parent questions about our children’s experience, and to feed our student volunteers. Sign-ups can be found here. Volunteer slots begin at 3:30 and end at 7:30, and vary in length.
As we move into November, we invite you to join us for a much-needed evening together as a community! We are thrilled to bring back our in-person Comedy Night at Gotham Comedy Club on November 2. Our entire Bronx Science community is invited to join us at this adult-only event. Tickets are on sale here. More details can be found in the post below.
Finally, we’d like to congratulate Claudia Goldin, ’63, on her recent Nobel Prize in Economics for her work on gender gaps in workforce participation and earnings. She is the first female solo winner in Economics, the first female Nobel Laureate from Bronx Science, and the 9th Nobel Laureate from our beloved school. Congratulations, Dr. Goldin!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Allen-Cheng, Elizabeth Polkovitz, and Christine Kattan
