Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents and Guardians,

Our main focus this week: Elections and the Gala.

Your vote is needed! Elections for Education Councils, which includes the Citywide Council on High Schools (CCHS), are happening now and voting ends in just two (2) days on May 9.

Why is it important for you to vote in the CCHS election? All high school families in NYC are represented by the CCHS, which can have a real impact on issues such as budget and school utilization. Several months ago, our school, along with other specialized high schools, faced potential major budget cuts. Fortunately, those cuts did not occur, but this experience underscores how important it is to have representatives in Education Councils, such as the CCHS, who understand our school and community. Each family has one ballot PER STUDENT in NYC public schools. As of this week, only 2% of our BxSci families have voted in the CCHS election. Although the PA cannot publicly endorse any candidate, the CCHS post below gives you the tools to help you vote. Your voice really does matter!

On the topic of elections, the BxSci PA will be holding Executive Board and School Leadership Team (SLT) elections for the 2023-24 school year on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 7:00 PM. This is a remote-only meeting. Attendees must register for this meeting here. A meeting link will be provided upon registration.

Candidates bios for the uncontested slate can be found here, and the agenda for the May meeting found here. The nomination process has closed, and nominations will not be taken from the floor.

This is it! The Spring Gala is a mere four days away, and our gala team has been working around the clock to make this special event happen. We look forward to a great night with many of you! Although the online auction is closed, you can still participate in extended bidding on two amazing seats for the Taylor Swift concert here! Our Raffle winner will be announced during the May 11 live event. Winner need not be present.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

The year isn’t over, and there are several upcoming events where we need community support. Please save the dates below. Volunteer signups will be sent out next week for the following events:

Alumni Day: Sunday, June 4, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

New Parent Breakfast: Thursday, June 8, 9:00 AM-12:00 noon

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week! For students and their families who would like to send notes of appreciation to their teachers and staff, here is the list of all faculty emails for your reference.

As we close this week’s newsletter, we want to acknowledge all our senior students. Monday, May 1, was National College Decision Day. While some seniors made their decision months ago, this day represents the end of a long journey, filled with lots of hard work, anticipation, and a range of emotions. We hope our students take a moment to reflect on that journey, take pride in the work they put in and celebrate the possibilities ahead.

To help our senior families add a little flair to celebrations in the coming months, the Bronx Science PA is delighted to present the ’23 Graduation Celebration Toolkit. Please find an assortment of designs to choose from to create special banners, signs, and other decorations. We thank former BxSci parent Sau Wai and current BxSci parent Alex Chirinian for creating this wonderful resource!

We will be back next week with highlights from the gala and more updates! In the meantime, please make sure to get your vote in for the CCHS election by May 9, register for the May 17 PA meeting and save the dates for our upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Christine Kattan, Jayesh Patel and Elizabeth Polkovitz
