Bronx High School of Science Parents' Assocation

News from our Co-Presidents: February 7, 2021

Dear fellow parents and guardians,

We want to wish all in our community a Happy Lunar New Year! At Bronx Science, the Year of the Ox will start with a well-deserved break for our students. School will be closed from Friday, February 12th through Sunday, February 21st. School will resume on Monday, February 22nd.

Anytime between now and the break, however, we ask parents grades 9-11 to take a few minutes to fill out a Private-Bus Survey here. While the PA and school cannot contract with companies, we can help gather information. It will be used to assess needs and to research solutions for transportation for Academic Year 2021-22. Deadline is Feb. 12.

As we reported last week, PA Wellness Walks have begun, and now they’re growing in number. Thank you again to parent Alison Gardy, who organized the first walk in Riverside Park. See below for details about other walks planned for the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens. It’s a great way to meet other Bronx Science parents and to get out from behind your screens.

Bronx Science parents braved the cold last weekend to go for a walk in Riverside Park

Our next PA meeting will be held this Wednesday, February 10th at 7:00pm. See Zoom details below. The topic, Course Selection (presented by Assistant Principals Allison Davis and Andrew Nasser), is always of keen interest to our parent community. During the meeting — drum roll, please — we will be announcing the winner of our Winter Raffle. It’s not too late to purchase a ticket for your chance for a new Apple iPad Air (see details below). And on a more serious note, we will be electing our Nominations Committee for the spring PA/SLT election.

If you cannot attend the PA meeting, you can catch a nearly identical Course Selection presentation at this week’s Coffee with the Principal, also on Wednesday, Feb. 10th, at 8:30am. Register for that meeting here by tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 8 at 9:00am.

Also at Wednesday’s PA meeting, we will have a breakout room with a panel of parents of recently graduated students.  The theme of that discussion will be Things I Wish I Knew Before My Kid Went to College. Zoom details for this breakout session will be made available during our main meeting.

Looking ahead, our next Book Club meeting will be on Thursday, Feb. 25th at 7:00pm, when we discuss The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Start reading now. To RSVP for this month’s meeting, or if you have questions, contact BxSciPABookClub@gmail.com and mention “Omnivore’s Dilemma” in the subject line.

Finally, our next Comedy Night will be Thursday, March 4th at 7:00pm. Please join Bronx Science parent and comedian Zarna Garg and friends for an evening of family-friendly entertainment. Our November Comedy Night was a huge success. Don’t miss this one! Tickets for this Bronx Science fundraiser can be purchased here. Stay tuned for more information.

SCIENCE FROM THE HEART
A parent told us this week how she and her Bronx Science senior were walking around their neighborhood last week. “He suddenly stopped and pointed to his train station,” she told us, and wrote that he had “tears in his eyes and looked so nostalgic.” He said he guessed he wouldn’t be entering that station for his daily rides to school anymore. That broke her heart, she said, and went on to write that as much as her son hated getting up crazy early for his morning commutes to Bronx Science, there was something so special and truly magical about the school. She referenced our inimitable parent coordinator, Cindy Golan: “As Cynthia always said, ‘It’s worth the trip.’ And now I believe it!”

Stay safe Bronx Science.
