Bronx High School of Science Parents' Assocation

News from Our Co-Presidents September 24, 2023

September 24, 2023

Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents and Guardians,

What a week! It was a thrill to welcome so many of you back to school for our first PA meeting of the year. We were pleased to introduce our leadership this year and pass our amended budget, and we sincerely hope you enjoyed our grade-level presentations. We received positive feedback from parents, and we extend a very warm thank you to AP Andrew Nasser, and guidance counselors Jacole Mills, Lauren Casey, and Ralph Elia for giving their time and expertise to our parent community. We were delighted that many of you joined us in person, and we hope to see that trend grow. We are fortunate to have such willing partners at the school, and there’s really no comparison between a room full of smiling faces and a screen full of black squares.

Yesterday, several of you joined us to feed our alumni and sell them merchandise as they met with and coached our seniors for the Bronx Science Foundation’s Project Accepted. We’ll share photos and thank all of our volunteers by name next week, but for now, many thanks to Lilach Bar for doing all the advance hospitality work on this event, and a big thank you to the parents who joined our alumni as interviewers for our seniors.

Events like Project Accepted and the involvement of the Bronx Science Foundation are part of what makes Bronx Science special. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Foundation President Eleanor Coufos, ’99, the Foundation, and all the alumni who came out to help our seniors fine tune their statements and present their best selves to colleges. Our support at events like this matters, and makes our entire community, from current students to faculty, staff, and alumni, feel welcomed, supported, and appreciated.

Upcoming Events

On October 11, at 8:30 AM, the school will be holding the annual Safety Town Hall as part of the Coffee With the Principal morning series.

As we announced at the first PA meeting, our fall elections will be held online only via Zoom on October 18, 2023, at 7 PM. 9th grade and incoming 10th grade parents and guardians are eligible to run for three Member-at-Large seats, and 9th grade parents are also eligible to run for a seat on the School Leadership Team. This is a great opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to our community. If you are nominating someone else, that nomination is due by 11:59 PM Sun Sep 24, and self nominations are due Wednesday, September 27, by 11:59 PM. Please see the post below for more details.

Then, on October 24, we are pleased to support the school for the Fall Open House. We are in need of MANY volunteers for this event, which is always a really joyous celebration of our school. Watch next week’s newsletter for a sign-up link, and please save the date!

But first, next Tuesday, September 26, we are hosting a Senior Parent Social at The Turnmill, 119 East 27th Street, from 5:30-8:00 PM. With planning by Lisa Schirf and Guillaume Goussalt, this is a chance for Class of 2024 parents and guardians to gather and socialize as our kids settle into their final year at Bronx Science. There is a cash bar and food available for purchase at the venue, but no fee to attend. This event is for adults only. RSVP here.

For the rest of you who might be craving a night out, socialization, and a lot of laughs, we invite you to save the date for the return of LIVE Comedy night at Gotham Comedy Club. Please save the date of Thursday, November 2 from 6-9 PM, and watch this newsletter for more information on tickets and talent!

Before you go, be sure to check out our current volunteer needs. We are still seeking a few key personnel to help lead teams, as well as core committee members in several areas. NOTE: If you have other skills or talents and want to explore ways you can help our community, please fill out this Volunteer Form.

We’ll see you soon! We wish those of you who celebrate Yom Kippur an easy fast, and those of you who celebrate a happy Mid-Autumn Moon Festival next weekend.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Allen-Cheng, Christine Kattan, and Elizabeth Polkovitz
