Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents & Guardians,

This past week included a terrific outdoor social event along with the year’s first PA meeting featuring an informative panel discussion. It feels great to get back into the swing of things!

Event and Meeting Highlights

On Saturday, September 17, Bronx Science families gathered at Ellington in the Park on a beautiful early fall evening. It was wonderful to meet new families and to reconnect with familiar faces. These in-person gatherings are a great opportunity to build community and personal relationships, while providing an informal setting to share ideas.

Our first General PA meeting on Tuesday, September 20, was an evening full of important back-to-school business, but the true highlight was a “Back to School” panel of both experienced Bronx Science parents and students, moderated by AP Andrew Nasser. A special thanks to Andrew, and to our fellow parents Alison GardyCliff Stanton and Ken Ho, along with students Baila Diallo ‘24, Nora Torok ‘25Severjan Azirov ‘26, and Sheikh Islam ‘23 who graciously shared their personal experiences and insights. It was a warm, welcome way to start the school year and a reminder of the many ways Bronx Science supports our parent and student community.

The PA would also like to extend our gratitude to all the parent volunteers (see below) who helped us welcome participants to our first PA meeting of the year. We appreciate those of you who joined us either in person or remotely. Both options have benefits and challenges, and we seek to improve the experience offered by these hybrid sessions. If you have expertise in A/V technology for large Zoom meetings and are able to help us improve these meetings, please reach out to us at president@bxsciencepa.org. If you were unable to attend, please find a recording of the meeting here.

Our next PA meeting is Wednesday, October 19th at 7:00 PM where we will be conducting an important election. To allow for maximum participation, the October meeting will be remote only. Participants will be required to register in advance for this meeting. More information to follow.

Upcoming Election

We congratulate and extend our heartfelt gratitude to the members of our newly elected Nominating Committee: Alison Gardy (Chair), Cliff StantonEllen Goldberg and Lucy Yang. Our Nominating Committee plays a vital role to ensure smooth and fair elections.

The Nominating Committee is currently seeking nominations from incoming and freshman parents and guardians to run for open positions on our PA Executive Board and School Leadership Team (SLT). This is an excellent way to get involved and contribute to the school!

Please see an important message from our Nominating Committee which contains details on open positions in the Election post below. Please note that all nominations must be received by Friday, September 30th at 11:59 PM.

Involvement

The PA is actively seeking volunteers who can help with Project Accepted, one of the biggest and most valuable programs offered to our seniors. Sponsored by the Bronx Science Alumni Foundation, Project Accepted is a half day event where alumni help our seniors prepare for interviews, provide strategies for applying to college and more! It’s one of many unique opportunities our children have as Bronx Science students, and the PA is incredibly grateful for the tremendous and consistent support of our Alumni Foundation. To help their efforts and do our part to make this year’s program a success, we are seeking volunteers to help on Sunday, October 2nd to meet our hospitality needs and feed our dedicated alumni volunteers and seniors! Please sign up to help with Project Accepted hereFreshmansophomore, or junior parents only: if you have expertise in interviewing or admissions and would like to be an interviewer for this event, please email us at president@bxsciencepa.org.

Another opportunity to get involved is by joining our Spring Gala Committee! Our annual gala is the most highly anticipated event each spring, but planning starts now! A big thank you to freshman parent Gabrielle Koelbel and sophomore parent Shirah Wercberger, our 2023 Spring Gala Co-Chairs! Please see the Spring Gala post below for an important announcement regarding the first meeting this Wednesday, September 28th. Let’s lend our support to the new co-chairs and our school!

If you are interested in more ways you can help out now, please fill out a Volunteer Form or reach out to us at president@bxsciencepa.org.

The school year is off to a great start, and we look forward to broad participation from the parent community.

We wish all who celebrate it a Happy Rosh Hashanah. L’Shanah Tovah!

Sincerely,

Christine Kattan, Jayesh Patel and Elizabeth Polkovitz
