Bronx High School of Science Parents' Assocation

News from our Co-Presidents: May 16, 2021

Dear Parents & Guardians:

We’ve been waiting a long time for this. With the CDC lifting most mask requirements for vaccinated Americans this week, now seems like the perfect time for an actual Bronx Science parent-and-guardian get-together. Please join us this Saturday, May 22nd at the steps in front of Ellington in the Park (approximately W 105th St.) in Riverside Park from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Look for Cliff with Bronx Science regalia. We hope to see you there so we can raise a not-necessarily-alcoholic, biodegradable cup to our newly elected Executive Board and SLT reps and to the whole parent community that helped our kids get to this decidedly brighter moment. Bring what you want or avail yourself of the Ellington offerings. RSVP optional but helpful to: algardy@gmail.com

On behalf of the PA, we want to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to our graduating/outgoing Executive Board Members:

  • Jodi Kaplan
  • Nicole Kaplan
  • Kaitlin Pan
  • Katie Sperling
  • Jean Lee Yammer
  • Eugenia Zakharov

And, graduating SLT representatives:

  • Jonathan Freedman
  • John Keller

To a person, your contributions to Bronx Science went way above and beyond the call of duty. Best of luck in the big leagues! We will miss you all.

Onward. Our Virtual Gala & Auction was held yesterday. It’s too early to say how positive an impact the event had for the school from a fundraising standpoint, but as an evening of entertainment and community-building, it was a home run!  More huge thanks to Auction Chair Tracy Ballas, the entire PA Auction Committee (see the complete list below – these parents worked their tails off for Bx Sci) and our special guests, Host Cate Smit, Magician & Mentalist Ryan Oakes, Celebrity Auctioneer Lonnie Quinn, and Cocktail Coach Amy K. Amazing job everyone!

A busy day for Wolverine athletics on Harris Field this week.
Boys lacrosse (foreground) and soccer (background) left. Boys baseball right.

Next, we want to once again thank the members of the Transportation Information Committee for their incredibly hard work. Please see the Bus Service update below. The Committee has reopened the transportation preference survey so respondents can adjust their answers based on new information. They will collect updated data early next week.

YOUR ACTION REQUIRED: The PA is working with the Bronx Science Alumni Foundation to secure critical funding to complete the final phase of the renovation of our cafeteria. We urgently need to lobby the NYC City Council to include the funding for this project in the upcoming city budget. Thank you to the parents who have already done so, but here’s how you can help: Please open this letter that we are asking parents to date, sign and then email with the subject line “Bronx Science Reso-A request” to City Council Speaker Corey Johnson at SpeakerJohnson@council.nyc.gov and Council Finance Director Latonia McKinney at lmckinney@council.nyc.gov requesting the funding. If you’re so inclined, you can send the same letter to your City Councilmember. Find your representative to City Hall here. See more information below.

Finally, for those of you who missed an excellent State of the School presentation by Principal Rachel Hoyle and Assistant Principal Andrew Nasser last week, you can view it in entirety here.

Stay safe Bronx Science,

Jerome Kramer and Cliff Stanton
