Bronx High School of Science Parents' Assocation

News from our Co-Presidents: January 24, 2021

Dear Fellow Parents & Guardians:

This week, history was not just taught in our school’s virtual classrooms. It was also made in our nation’s capital. No matter how you feel about the political implications, surely we can all be proud and relieved that “democracy has prevailed.”

Closer to home, the PA hosted its first PA Book Club discussion on Ellington Boulevard. Approximately 30 parents participated in a lively and enriching virtual get-together. We hope even more parents join us next month when we discuss The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Start reading now. To RSVP for next month’s meeting, or if you have questions or concerns, contact BxSciPABookClub@gmail.com

PA Educational Enrichment Committee member Lora LaVon moderated the discussion. We were joined by the author and Bronx Science parent Adam Langer for a Q&A. (2nd row, 2nd from the right).

For those who are interested in getting a break from their screens and getting out and about (even in the middle of winter), the PA is in the process of organizing neighborhood walks. See details below.

Our next PA meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 10th at 7:00pm. The topic, Course Selection (presented by Assistant Principals Allison Davis and Andrew Nasser), is always of keen interest to our parent community, particularly grades 9-11. At this same meeting, we will have a breakout room with a panel of parents of recently graduated students. The theme of that discussion will be Things I Wish I Knew Before My Kid Went to College. More details to follow.

For those of us who are anxious about transportation to and from school next year following the announcement that the Vallo bus service is ending, the PA is in the process of forming a committee which will work with stakeholders to help research viable alternatives. If you’re interested in helping, please reach out to us.

Finally, let’s allow this excerpt from The Hill We Climb by National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman (recited on Inauguration Day) to echo in our minds …

If we merge mercy with might,
and might with right,
then love becomes our legacy
and change our children’s birthright
So let us leave behind a country
better than the one we were left with

Stay safe Bronx Science.
