Bronx High School of Science Parents' Assocation

Parent Spotlight: Jing Gao

Each school year, many BxSci parents volunteer their time and talent to help our school. In recent issues of this newsletter, we’ve featured Lise Aug and Lidija Markes. Today we’d like you to learn more about another parent who helps the PA with several important initiatives.

Jing Gao is one of five moms providing written Chinese translations for parents. (The other fantastic volunteers on the Chinese translation team are Jaime Lam, Yan Hu, Weimin Huang, and Diana Wu.) Jing and her fellow team members take turns translating this newsletter and other related documents, such as speaker biographies and assorted school announcements. They provide a crucial service to the hundreds of Chinese families in our school community.

In addition, Jing is a frequent volunteer at PA events, whether it’s helping to prepare and set up refreshments for PA meetings or serving meals at school functions. She even spent part of her summer volunteering at BxSci parent events!

Jing has a sophomore daughter at Bronx Science. They live in the Bronx, and we’re sure that Jing would spend even more time at school if it weren’t for her full-time job in Manhattan as a scientist at Rockefeller University. Here’s what Jing says about volunteering:

“I appreciate what Bronx Science does for its great students, and what the Parents’ Association does at Bronx Science. As a parent, I know how important it is for all the families here to get informed about their kids at school. I love contributing to translating work so that all non-English-speaking Chinese families can get the information they need.”

Our thanks to Jing for everything she does for our school!

If you, too, would like to volunteer in some capacity, please fill out this online form. Volunteer opportunities abound throughout the year, and not all of them require you to travel to the Bronx. By volunteering, you’ll meet new people, have some fun, and develop an even greater appreciation for how wonderful our school is.
