Celebrating with Science!

April 14, 2024

Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents and Guardians,

This past week marked another successful and festive Spring Gala to remember!

It was great to see our community celebrate the night away, all while raising funds for our school! The food was delicious, drinks were flowing, and attendees were jamming to incredible live music thanks to Bronx Science parents Alyssa and Tony Cheng and their bandmates. The PA would like to thank emcee Katie Isaacs and auctioneer Cate Smit for leading the evening’s event and energizing the crowd, and Nami Fujita for another year of rocking gala graphic designs and artwork.

A special acknowledgement to senior committee member Tina Metis, for her fourth year of gala service and for breaking sponsorship records, and to 9th grade parent Erin Kromann for brilliantly leading auction donations. Also, we would like to recognize Ashok Eastman for managing the Herculean task of volunteer coordination. The entire Gala Committee Team deserves a huge THANK YOU for their commitment and service to our school. There are still so many individuals to thank! Please see the In the Spotlight post below for recognition of the entire team.

Last, but certainly not least, we want to express our deepest gratitude to rock star Gala Chair Gabrielle Koelbel. None of this would have been possible without her leadership, passion, and her tireless efforts over many, many months. Please join us in another round of applause for Gabrielle and for all the folks who made this event come to life.

We appreciate everyone who supported this event in countless ways. From purchasing tickets, bidding, donating items, making connections, or volunteering, our collective effort raised funds for our students and for a new on-campus outdoor gathering space. Thanks to BxSci parent and architect, Alex Chirinian, for designing several architectural concepts for this space. Please enjoy some highlights from the event below.

We have a few important events this week. Please join us as we welcome Superintendent Fia Davis to our next in person PA meeting on Wednesday, April 17 at 7:00 PM. A light dinner will be served beginning at 6:30 PM, and the meeting will begin promptly at 7 PM. Please find the agenda here and the March minutes here.

We will be voting on bylaw changes, which were presented at the March general meeting and can be found here. Please review these changes ahead of the meeting. Then, we will be taking nominations for the PA Executive Board (EB) and the School Leadership Team (SLT) from the floor. Please review the Nominations Committee post for important details, including the key difference between EB and SLT FINAL nomination deadlines. For more information, questions, or to submit a nomination, please reach out to nominations@bxsciencepa.org.

Following the business portion of the evening, we are pleased to welcome a student panel moderated by AP of Guidance, Andrew Nasser, who will be discussing the topic “How to Have Difficult Conversations with Teens.” This panel has historically been well attended, emotional, and extremely valuable to our parents and guardians. Please use this form link to RSVP for dinner and to submit your questions in advance of the meeting. Due to the sensitive nature of certain topics, all questions will be screened.

We are also still actively seeking more volunteers to help with the College Fair on Wednesday, May 1, which is the day we return from Spring Break! This is an exciting opportunity for our 10th and 11th graders, and BxSci hospitality always shines brightly at this event. Please sign up here to help to set up dinner for the college reps, serve and clean up.

Batter up! Grab your tickets for a Night Out at Yankee Stadium on Friday, May 17, at 7:05 PM. Join BxSci families, teachers, staff, and friends for a fun and relaxed evening while we cheer on the Yankees! Purchase discounted tickets here, which includes a $15 voucher for food or beverage at the game. Ticket sales end on May 9 at 11:59 PM. Please note, this is a community event, not a fundraiser.

Finally, don’t forget to fill out your NYC School Survey. The deadline has been extended to April 19. While the survey is completely anonymous, the school can track which families complete the survey. The school does not see student, teacher, or parent responses. However, this information does help the school best serve our school community. As a bonus for the kids, there will be a grade wide prize to the grade level that has the highest percentage of parent/guardian surveys completed by the deadline.

We look forward to seeing you at the in-person PA meeting this Wednesday!

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Polkovitz, Jennifer Allen-Cheng, and Christine Kattan
