Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents and Guardians, 中文版
This past Tuesday, Bronx Science held an Open House and was host to thousands of prospective students and their families. These prospective families enjoyed watching a presentation about the school, met faculty members, heard about our wonderful academic programs, clubs and activities from our students and had the opportunity to tour the entire building. The energy on Tuesday night was palpable and we saw many excited faces of young people, no doubt dreaming of walking our halls as students next year!
We would like to thank Lorne Kerr and Nicole Allen, our Open House Co-Chairs, for overseeing the PA portion of this event. The PA would also like to extend our gratitude to Fotini Marcopulos and Anne Tien, Hospitality Team Co-Chairs, for arranging to feed the hundreds of student volunteers and to our parent and guardian volunteers who assisted with making this Open House such a tremendous success, serving pizza to the student volunteers and answering visitor questions throughout the entire building. Please see below for images from the event and the In The Spotlight post for full recognition of our wonderful volunteers!
On Thursday, our Parents’ Association conducted our fall election. For our elections to run smoothly, they require the hard work and dedication of many people that we would like to acknowledge. But first, congratulations and welcome to Ami Kantawala, Sneha Kelkar and Sovannary Tan, our newly elected Executive Board Members at Large, and to Stacey Berg Keller, our new School Leadership Team parent representative. We look forward to serving with you!
The PA extends our heartfelt gratitude to every candidate who stepped forward to serve our community and to our Nominating Committee members Ellie Buchalter (Co-Chair), Jodi Solomon (Co-Chair), Ted Scala and Haihong (Haidy) Wang for the professionalism, dedication and care they put forth to run free and fair PA and SLT elections. Thanks also to our post-election ballot verifiers Jodi Solomon, Ellie Buchalter, Wendy Stryker, Ted Scala, Bryan Liff, Neil Palmer and Aaron Hawn and to our Tech Team members Bryan Liff, Neil Palmer and Aaron Hawn for handling the multiple technical aspects of a virtual election. A special recognition and thanks to Parent Coordinator Rebecca Barreras and Bronx Science’s Chief Information Officer Willie Lugo, whose assistance was a critical part of running this election.
While our Nominating Committee did a stellar job on Thursday night, running these elections is a big job and more help is needed to run our next election in May 2025. Please consider joining the Nominating Committee! To receive more information and/or to join the team, please contact the committee chairs at nominations@bxsciencepa.org.
Prior to the election, our community was treated to a special presentation from Bronx Science faculty member Mr. Jep Jonson, who highlighted reasons why some students struggle with school and schedules, and offered useful, pragmatic advice on how we can support our teens. We thank Mr. Jonson and AP Andrew Nasser for sharing their time with us, their guidance, and their dedication to our students. Please find a copy of the presentation here. The Executive Skills Questionnaire for Teens and Parents is here. It will help parents assess their students’ executive skills.
Last, but certainly not least, we thank everyone who tuned into our meeting and election. We were pleased by the turnout and invite you to continue to attend our monthly meetings. We encourage you to plan ahead and attend in-person events whenever possible. The more we gather, the greater our community can become. Our next PA meeting will be held in-person on Thursday, November 21, with a special presentation about college admissions and standardized testing. Details can be found on the PA website here and look for more information as we get closer to the meeting.
Your PA Dollars At Work
Funded in part by PA donations, Bronx Science athletic and academic teams, as well as clubs and student events, are off and running! One upcoming event is the Student Organization’s annual Bronxtoberfest which is a big hit with the students! It is one of the many ways that the PA supports our students to make their high school experience as memorable as possible.
To continue supporting our students, please consider giving to the Annual Fund – no amount is too small. We would like to thank the many parents and guardians who have generously donated in support of our Annual Fund. Our goal this year is to raise $300K, and we hope that you will help us to reach our goal. The funds we raise support Bronx Science’s athletic and academic teams, as well as clubs and student events. Please consider donating to our fund via this link, through which you can learn more and donate!
On Thursday, October 24, all parents/guardians are invited to Join Bronx North Superintendent Marcel Deans for a virtual town hall. Please see the post below for more information and a link to join the meeting.
Don’t forget to buy tickets for our comedy night event on December 3! Early bird tickets are selling fast, so get yours while you can! Please see the Comedy Night post below for all the details.
Once again, a huge thank you to everyone who made our most recent PA and SLT elections a success and congratulations to our new Executive Board and SLT members. We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Allen-Cheng, Xia (Lisa) Li and Arthur Wong
