Accepted!
March 31, 2024
Dear Fellow Bronx Science Parents and Guardians,
We hope that everyone is enjoying the long weekend and send our best to those who are celebrating Easter. This past Wednesday was one of our busiest and most fun events as Bronx Science welcomed hundreds of students and their families to the Accepted Students Open House! Visitors were greeted by enthusiastic volunteers who congratulated and cheered for them as they entered the building. Families then watched an informative presentation about the school, toured the building, met with staff and student hosts, learned about transportation options and received a preview of the many exciting clubs and activities available to Bronx Science students. The Parents’ Association provided dinner to our student volunteers and sold Bronx Science merchandise; this was one of our biggest sales yet, and it was terrific to see the excitement of the families as they stocked up on Bronx Science swag!
Many thanks to Open House Co-Chairs Xia (Lisa) Li and Lorne Kerr for their extraordinary efforts. We also thank Hospitality Co-Chair Lilach Bar for arranging the hospitality portion of this event, and Merchandise Manager Ernie Sander for managing one of our biggest merchandise events of the year. Please see the post below for photos from the event and for our expressions of gratitude to the many volunteers who made this such a successful event!
Don’t fret if you missed an opportunity to volunteer for this event, as we have others coming up and welcome your help! First, on April 16, we will be hosting the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony and Dinner. We need 10 parent volunteers from 3:00 PM-7:00 PM to help our Hospitality Team set up, serve dinner and cleanup. Signup for this event here. Parents of Junior members, this is a great opportunity to get a sneak preview of what your celebration will look like next year. Student volunteers should contact NHS advisor Paul DeSilva.
Two other important events in April are the Bronx Science Gala which will be held on April 11 and our next PA meeting on April 17 at 7 PM! Please see the post below for more information about the Gala and to purchase tickets!
Our next PA meeting is on April 17 and the special presentation is the topic “How to Have Difficult Conversations with Teens,” featuring a student panel moderated by AP Andrew Nasser, which has been well attended and extremely valuable to our parents/guardians in the past. Please use this form link to submit your questions in advance of that meeting. The topic of “Teens and Substance Abuse” will be rescheduled for a later date this spring, so please stay tuned for more information on this important topic.
Planning ahead, the Bronx Science College Fair will be held on May 1 which will provide another opportunity to volunteer as our Hospitality Team will need assistance to provide dinner to our visiting college representatives. The link to volunteer will be provided later this month.
We continue to be in need of new Hospitality Co-Chairs to start shadowing our current Co-Chairs this spring and to lead in the fall. To learn more about this role, click here. Please reach out to hospitality@bxsciencepa.org if you have additional questions or if you have interest!
There are numerous ways to get involved! As mentioned, PA Executive Board and School Leadership Team (SLT) elections are coming up. Please see the Election post for an important Nominating Committee message which includes position details and deadlines.
A final reminder to fill out the NYC School survey here. The deadline is April 5, and it takes only 5-10 minutes. Please help our school best serve our community. Students in the grade with the highest percentage of parent/guardian responses will receive a grade-wise prize!
Enjoy the weekend!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Allen-Cheng, Christine Kattan, and Elizabeth Polkovitz
